How Can I Remove Small Scratches From My Car?

Posted on 17-Oct-2018 09:00:00

If you’ve had your car for a while, you may start to notice small scratches in the paintwork that dull the radiant glow that the paint once had. These small scratches can be caused by washing your car with poor technique, inferior or dirty sponges, harsh brushes at self-service carwashes, drive-through carwashes with flicking straps that aren’t well cared for and can even be caused by birds and cats walking on the car or from driving past bushes and shrubs. The good news is that superficial scratches can often be improved or even avoided with a few simple steps at your local car wash.

Ideally, when you first purchase your car you would ensure that you invest in paint protection. A hydrophobic layer and sacrificial barrier, the protective coating can stop superficial scratches from ever reaching the paintwork. To keep the vehicle in peak condition, with as few small scratches as possible, regular car detailing services like paint cleansing treatments and waxing will have you well on your way.

Once you have swirl marks and small scratches visible on the paintwork though, it’s likely a cut and polish will be required to restore your pride and joy to its former glory. A cut and polish is best left to the professionals and your nearest car wash would be happy to give you a quote and discuss how successful they are likely to be at removing the small scratches. Depending on the severity of the scratches a cut and polish may not be able to remove all traces of the damage. In this case, your local car wash may refer you for minor scratch and dent repairs.

Following a thorough wash and paint cleansing treatment, the cut and polish will be completed using an orbital buff and special compounds which work to restore the surface of the paint. Once the cut and polish is complete, it’s the perfect time to have paint protection applied in order to keep your paint in the best condition possible moving forward. Then regular car cleaning with quality, pH neutral soap and clean, fit for purpose sponges that will not lead to further scratching. Leave it up to the car wash experts at your local Magic and top it off with a regular hand wax and polish and you won’t have to worry about swirl marks again.
